Packsize, a specialist in packaging automation, and printing press manufacturer Efi unveil the first fruit of their collaboration. Together, the two U.S. groups have developed the Packsize Efi X5 Nozomi, the world’s first automatic production system for customized RSCs incorporating color printing.

This machine combines Packsize’s fully automated X5 on-demand packaging system with Efi’s Nozomi single-pass inkjet printing line for corrugated board, in CMYK plus orange thanks to Greenguard-certified led inks.

The Packsize Efi X5 Nozomi reduces the traditional manufacturing process from seven steps to just one. David Lockwood, CEO of Packsize, assures: “No other machine can go from blank corrugated board to printed cases, in the right format and assembled on demand in a single solution – and so quickly: in six seconds per box.” Up to 600 ready-to-use cases, each the right size and shape, can be printed, produced and formed per hour.

The solution, which produces cardboard packaging in the right format, reduces packaging waste from oversized boxes, lowering transport emissions (up to 66% fewer cartons on freight and delivery carriers, according to Efi) and eliminates cushioning such as plastic air cushions, improving the overall experience for the end consumer.

What’s more, Efi sees this as an important marketing asset. “Unboxing videos are having a growing impact on brands, and at the same time, the influence of digital advertising is diminishing due to oversaturation and ad blocking.” notes Frank Pennisi, CEO of Efi, making it clear that the packaging sells the product.
