Westbury Packaging and CackleBean have created a beautiful and sustainable retail packaging solution.

CackleBean, purveyor of exquisite eggs, founded in 2013 and is based at Cackleberry Farm, which is nestled at the foot of a hill just outside Stow-on-the-Wold in Gloucestershire. Run by Paddy and Steph Bourns, their rare breed flocks are entirely free range and live in traditional chicken houses on 12 acres of land. Their eggs are sold via high-end stockists and direct to lots of wonderful chefs, restaurants, pubs, makers and bakers in London and in the local area.

The goal was to create a packaging design that not only protected the product but also conveyed the exceptional quality of the CackleBean eggs. By opting for an intricate, highly detailed print, an innovative hexagonal shape for both the outer and the fitment, and eco-friendly materials, the aim was to capture the consumer’s eye, give them a WOW moment and leave them with a lasting impression.

The new packaging serves as a bold statement, further setting the CackleBean product apart from competitors and reinforcing their brand’s identity. In essence, the packaging needed to be as remarkable as the product itself, ensuring that the first interaction a customer had with CackleBean eggs was for interacting and showcasing a memorable and delightful product.

The new box is made from paper-based corrugated packaging, which has superb structural and technical qualities, as well as excellent sustainability, recycling and biodegradability credentials. The Westbury Packaging site is FSC certified by the Forest Stewardship Council®, which helps support the future of forests and the people and wildlife who call them home.

Continuing in this vein, the packaging contains no additional glue, printed with water based inks and is made of 100% corrugated material. Westbury Packaging achieved carbon neutrality in 2020 when we set up a robust environmental policy for the business, which covered everything from energy, recycling, fuel, vehicles, lighting, office/factory temperatures, travel, employee behaviour, and much much more.

Paddy and Steph Bourns, aka Mr and Mrs CackleBean, said, “We don’t sleep until we know our flock is tucked up safely in bed at the farm and now, we can extend that feeling of safety knowing that our new packaging supports our eggs on their journey from the farm to our customers’ homes.

This new packaging has been a labour of love and it’s our pride and joy to introduce it to our customers! We came up with the concept fifteen years ago and recently we’ve worked very closely with Westbury Packaging to make it into a reality. Our new boxes deliver on many fronts – functionality, sustainability and excitement. We’re very pleased with the finished product.”

Cameron McColl, Sales Director of Westbury Packaging, said “It’s a pleasure to have customers such as Cackleberry. We have loved working on this highly innovative project with Paddy and Steph as we have been able to apply our innovative skills towards creating an exciting, sustainable solution. Their brand is beautiful. We’ve been delighted to be able to reflect this in our products we make and supply them.”

Westbury Packaging has supported many manufacturers to create new sustainable packaging that marries their company values and gives that all important WOW factor ensuring their products stand out from the crowd.
